About the event

Dr. Devika Umashanker is the Medical Director of Obesity Medicine at Hartford HealthCare Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Program . She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and fellowship trained in Obesity Medicine at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medicine. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and is a certified Physician nutrition specialist. She is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCONN School of Medicine and Frank Netter School of Medicine. Dr. Umashanker’s primary areas of expertise include weight management, preoperative weight loss, and post-operative bariatric surgical care and nutrition management. Her academic interests focus on the development of obesity medicine curriculums and teachings for fellows, residents and medical students. Dr. Umashanker has lectured and published on the topics of management and treatment plans for obesity medicine, bariatric surgery, and weight stigma and bias.

Objectives

1. Review bariatric surgical options for eligible patients including lap band, sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch

2. Review perioperative nutrition management and micronutrient management

3. Review role of anti-obesity pharmacotherapy and VLCD for preoperative bariatric surgical weight loss.
